Modern painting - Anima and Animus, or the collective unconscious

Modern painting - Anima and Animus, or the collective unconscious

This modern painting depicts the perpetual fight between masculine and feminine, war, truce, peace, regret, victimization, assumption, reconciliation, symbiosis, compromise, love, hate, life, universe.

Better yet, this is the representation of the "collective unconscious" - the structure of the unconscious mind which are shared by same species beings.

This collective unconscious is driven by instincts and archetypes and universal symbols: The Great Mother, the Wise Old Man, the Shadow, the Tower, Water, and the Tree of Life.

"And the essential thing, psychologically, is that in dreams, fantasies, and other exceptional states of mind the most far-fetched mythological motifs and symbols can appear autochthonously at any time, often, apparently, as the result of particular influences, traditions, and excitations working on the individual, but more often without any sign of them. These "primordial images" or "archetypes," belong to the basic stock of the unconscious psyche and cannot be explained as personal acquisitions. Together they make up that psychic stratum which has been called the collective unconscious."

Carl Gustav Jung - The Significance of Constitution and Heredity in Psychology

Anima and animus are one of the anthropomorphic archetypes of the unconscious mind:

Anima (breath, soul, spirit or vital force) represents the sum of the unconscious feminine qualities that resile in a man. Animus (rational soul, life, mind, mental powers, courage or desire) represents all the masculine that a woman possesses. Together, they are the symbol that adds up the Self.

"Every personification of the unconscious - the shadow, the anima, the animus, and the Self - has both a light and a dark aspect....the anima and animus have dual aspects: They can bring life-giving development and creativeness to the personality, or they can cause petrification and physical death."
